Build Your Man-Cabin Like Jim Olson

Earlier this week we share Escape Traveler Road Cabin which you can move around locations. But if you’re fond of living in woods permanently then you can get a huge inspiration from Jim Olson’s cabin located in Puget Sound, an area at northwestern coast of the U.S. state of Washington. While the mainstream architects were busy in urban landscaping, Jim Olson preferred to work with wood. Build in 1959, when he was 18, this cabin was nothing more than just a 14-square foot bunk but over the time of 55 years Jim transformed it into his personal retreat.

Every wood and layer added to this living space resides a hard work and patience of Jim. The structure uses steel columns, fir floors that extend from outside deck to inner rooms. The floor-to-ceiling windows give spectacular views of greenery and Puget Sound. Peter Pichler’s Mirror Houses Reflect Amazing Beauty of The Dolomites
People love two things the most, uniqueness and nature. An ordinary farmhouse owner from Italy got this secret straight into his mind and turned his old farmhouse into a full-time luxury holiday units called mirror-houses. The farmhouse was built in the late 60s and has beautiful surroundings of sweet-smelling apple orchards and spectacular mountains of the dolomites. The owner asked the Peter Pichler Architecture to build a structure that offers multiple but completely separate apartments to ensure the maximum privacy of the paying guests.

The guests’ unit has an autonomous area of entrance, garden, terrace and parking. The units are provided with all possible necessary and luxurious items. Each unit has a living room, kitchen, bedroom and attached bath. The roofs feature broad openable skylights to enjoy natural light and ventilation in the rooms. To make it more exposed to natural sunlight, windows and most parts of walls are made of glass (with eastern façade entirely of glass). Welcome, it’s Manhattan, the land of tycoons. Three years back, a rich ass Ekaterina Rybolovleva, daughter of fertilizer tycoon Dmitry Rybolovleva, made $88 million purchase for a penthouse in Sanford Weill’s 15 Central Park West. Wow! She made a record. But, they say, records are meant to be broken, something like so happened here in Manhattan when a crazy anonymous buyer generously gave $100.5 million to buy the most expensive penthouse at Gary Barnett’s One57. The deal was started in 2012 but closed on December 2014. It is 10,923 sq-ft in area and takes the whole 89^th and 90^th floors of the tower.

A tiny 8 by 20 feet house with 24 sq-ft outdoor porch is perfect for a tiny family. It consists of an elegant interior including a well-sized bedroom including a bath, basin and a toilet. There is a mini kitchen plus stainless steel 2 burner stove, lofty ceilings, an extra space for shelves and a dining table are also included. The house also has 10 windows with a glass door for natural light, a storage cabinet for propane, a washer/ dryer unit, water heater and an extra space for random house-hold stuff. Contemporary Norwegian Cabin Designed for Warmth
This takes us to a far-fetched fantasy to live in a luxurious warm house tucked in the woods whitewashed with snow. Cabin at Norderhov, Norway, is another project by Atelier Oslo that seeks to pull adventurous living with coziness. The site is much exposed to wind as it’s located by the Lake Steinsfjorden. Yet, the exterior is composed of linear shingles of basalt stone, enough to resist severe weather effects. Furthermore, the shape of the cabin itself is designed to offer multiple outdoor spaces to provide shelter from the wind. Large front windows are closed with non-conductive crash-proof triplex glass. Inside, the walls are curved and clad with birch plywood. The floor is made of hexagonal timber which is darker than the color of plywood. A glass-shielded fireplace was the ultimate necessity to provide warmth and glow. The electricity is generated by the solar panels installed upon the chimney.
